Most property owners are aware of the damage that moles can do to plants and irrigation systems. These small mammals spend the majority of their lives burrowing through the dirt and while they pose no threat to humans, they are nuisances that can wreak havoc on landscaping. Homeowners who discover them living on their property should call a local Atlanta mole control and removal specialist for help.

The average mole is between six and eight inches long and has a sleek coat of velvety black or gray fur. It has tiny ears and eyes that are practically invisible and short hind limbs. It digs tunnels in the dirt below the ground's surface by using its powerful forelimbs with large claws.

These creatures live and feed underground, so they rarely come out of their subterranean tunnels. In fact, most people only know a mole is living on their property because of the soil mounds and surface tunnels it creates throughout the lawn. It takes the average mole approximately a minute to dig a tunnel more than a foot long.

Moles sometimes feed on nuts but they prefer to eat worms, beetle grubs, and ants. They are most active in damp soil because their prey is easy to find close to the surface. They feed and sleep 24 hours per day in two-hour cycles, which is why they are capable of doing so much damage in so little time.

Sometimes the extent of the damage leads property owners to believe they have more than one mole living under their lawn. In reality, these are solitary animals and rarely get together unless it is mating season. A single mole can build an extensive tunnel system with multiple burrows and branches that can cover a large parcel of land. Tunnels may be more than six inches below ground level but those nearer to the surface destroy plant roots and leave telltale furrows in the lawn.

The use of lethal traps is the most effective way to control these pests. Poisons are rarely effective because the animal hunts using sound and only eats living prey so it is unlikely to consume bait saturated with poison. Qualified exterminators have the training necessary to identify active feeding tunnels and set their traps accordingly.

In addition to protecting the grass and landscaping, homeowners have to be concerned about moles destroying their sprinkler system. They can easily damage water lines and destroy sprinkler heads, causing hundreds of dollars in property damage. Finding a reputable local exterminator is the best way to rid any property of these unwelcome pests.
