If you're looking for an easy way to jazz up any outfit, you simply need to invest in some striking shoes. However, shoes that catch the eye are often not very comfortable for doing actual walking in. With the great selection of Western boots for sale, however, you get to look great while being kind to your feet too.

The Western or cowboy boot was designed as a riding boot. This is why it tends to have a narrower toe, which can fit into the stirrup with ease. The boot also has a higher heel known as a Cuban heel which keeps the boot in position while the rider is in the saddle. However, it isn't really conducive to walking long distances. A traditional cowboy boot doesn't have shoelaces because if the rider falls from the horse and his or her foot gets stuck in the stirrup, laces will make the boot difficult to remove and the rider will be dragged along the ground.

A more recent development is the roper boot, which is a variation of the classic cowboy boot. It's shorter and instead of the Cuban heel it comes with a low, square heel. Laces are often added to help the boot fit more comfortably. The roper boot gets its name from one of the activities that it was designed for, which is roping calves. These boots are indeed made for walking.

Cowboy boots are usually made of leather. Cowhide is used most often but some manufacturers use other types of leather, from soft kidskin to the hides of species like alligators and snakes. Sometimes the only decoration added is top stitching but you will also find footwear with cut-outs along the top or color inserts. You can even buy the footwear in dyed leather so that they come in any color under the sun or with patterns like cowhide motifs.

When you shop for a pair of cowboy boots, choose a pair that fits snugly. Over time the leather stretches and if you choose a size that is too big at the outset, you'll end up with footwear that keeps slipping off. Invest in a boot jack and boot hooks to help you remove and put on each boot until the leather has stretched sufficiently.

Cowboys are synonymous with horses and their footwear is synonymous with jeans. Jeans designers long ago created a style with a slight flare, known as the bootleg, so that the leg could accommodate the boot underneath. In ranch country the uniform is completed by a plaid shirt or a T-shirt and a Stetson, with an embroidered shirt and bolo tie for those dress-up days.

The problem with wearing traditional Western wear is that it only really works if you're a real cowboy or cowgirl or a country and western singer. For non-traditional ways to wear your boots, you have a myriad of options. Wear them with skinny jeans or leggings or pair them with a floaty summer dress, for instance. They even work well with shorts if you have the legs for it.

One of the best investments you can make is to have a boot maker create a custom-fitted pair for you. More economical is to look for pre-manufactured Western boots for sale at stores that sell ranch clothes or even at some regular shoe stores. You may also look online but remember that it's better to try on any footwear in person before you buy.
