NY Criminal records are considered as public document but it doesn't necessarily mean that it is easy to obtain. The document has been made open to the public when the Freedom of Information Act was in place. This law only allows the resident of a given state to get a copy of their personal files only. With that being said, those who wish to access the files other individual needs to have a special request to be granted access to the files of other people.

The search form has to be completely filled out with the necessary information to obtain the requested document. One has to pay $65 as a processing fee in order to proceed with the retrieval process. The state office accepts mailed-in requests; however, the results can take a while.

The Internet allows the retrieval of an arrest record faster since it can be done even without leaving home. One can even search for arrest records for free. There are several websites out there that lets its users have a trial period of at least 7 days. This gives the users enough time to explore the system and then decide if they wish to continue using the service by paying or not.
