In the past few days, the judges in South Carolina had given a ruling on the arbitrary killing of black over the last few months. It comes as a reprieve for many because this is a nation that has 47 percent of the population being the African American. These senseless killings of unarmed African Americans bring to the fore memories of the struggle against racism that the Americans paid with blood years ago.

A white officer was charged with the murder of an unarmed black man, and this made the citizens feel that justice was in place. The officer, Michael T Slager in his defense stated that he committed the crime since he was afraid for his life. Nonetheless, the crime footage shows a completely different story. The footage shows that Mr. Slager drew the weapon and shot Mr. Scot while he was running and was twenty feet away.

The video then shows very disturbing events when Mr. Slager handcuffs Mr. Scott then returns to the area of where the struggle began before picking something from the ground. Mr. Slager then goes ahead and return to where the body then drops it next to the body. That was not the only isolated case among the different killings of unarmed black Americans. Some of the other instances that the same repeated itself include.

Recently, Michael Brown who is a teenager in Ferguson was killed by another policeman. Eric Garner was not having any arm and was only selling loose cigarettes but was again shot by police in Staten Island by choking him.

The one that spark protests across the nation is the twelve-year-old boy Tamir Rice, who was killed when playing with a pellet gun. Why would such things happen to black people? Why are they being killed by policemen without any reason?

The answer to the above question was revealed in Ferguson this week The suburb of Saint Louis has been a home to the blacks and has increased since 1990 from twenty five percent to sixty seven percent as at 2010. Despite these demographic trends, the structure of power has not changed over the years. When Brown was shot, the members of the council were white except for one person who was black.

No black person was serving on the school board, and many of nearly over ninety percent of the police officers were white. With a population of 21000 that would not be acceptable. With such kind of unbalanced spread of power, it was likely that the blacks were more likely to be arrested, stopped and given harsher sentences than their white counterparts for the same crimes.

The ruling that was given was aimed at settling the record on the tendencies of racism. The heinous crimes have attracted lots of protests since August, and they shape municipal elections. Some of the candidates vying for these posts joined in the protests. It is, therefore, imperative to the residents of these regions to overhaul the politics of the region to prevent such things from happening again. Each group should be represented in councils so as to reduce instances of a given group being favoured.
