With the improvements in technology and increased demand for surfaces that can withstand heavy use, companies have managed to develop various solutions. One of the solutions is artificial grass, which is made from synthetic fibers but made resemble natural grass. Its ability to withstand heavy usage more frequently has seen some fields with natural turf being redone with the product. The product requires minimum maintenance hence making it attractive in terms of maximizing profits to owners of playgrounds.

There are many advantages associated with this product that cannot be matched by natural turf in any way. Maintenance encompasses many activities such as irrigation, trimming, and fertilizing among others. Such requirements are eliminated by this product besides being able to be installed in stadiums that are completely or partially covered at the top. Major areas of use include all forms of playgrounds such as golf courses and football pitches. Domestic uses in backyards and lawns are also possible.

Besides the many benefits that artificial turf presents, it also has its own shortcomings. The fibers have comparatively shorter life spans. Even though they are good for supporting heavy use, the fibers last a very short time compared to natural grasses. The fibers must also be maintained through regular cleaning and disinfection to keep them clean and in healthy condition.

The use of fake turf presents some increased safety concerns. First, friction resulting from contact between the fibers and the human body causes more severe injuries that normal grass. The atmosphere and the players also come into contact with toxic chemicals released by the infill. In response, manufacturers have modified the products to exclude infill and to incorporate better forms of fibers. This has raised safety than before.

Manufactures incorporate safety measures in the products that make them gain more use in various settings. Global annual sales and production levels of fake turf currently stands at billions of tons. There are different versions of the product and latest versions have better qualities than the old ones. As a result, FIFA and other major bodies that govern various sports have approved their use in playgrounds. Use of natural turf is however not made illegal.

Fake grass has replaced pavements and natural turf in most major airports worldwide because of the benefits they present. This product provides a safe surface on which firefighting vehicles and planes that stray off normal course can move over without being at risk. There is also a high reduction in foreign object damage besides the commodity not being able to attract wildlife in search of food. This has led to reduction in the number of collisions between animals and planes.

The ever green appearance of the turf provides a clear visual distinction between taxiways and runways even in winter. Runways are not washed away and are highly stabilized due to lack of mud during rainy seasons. The wheels of the planes do not also cause erosion of the runway due to friction. Reduced maintenance of this turf helps minimize costs and make the work of security personnel much easier during repairs and maintenance.

Price of these artificial products varies. Factors that affect price include size, brand, manufacturer, version, and quality. It is a safer option to invest in the expensive brands.
