The metalworking and woodworking fields are characterized by several different tools and pieces of equipment used by workers to accomplish tasks. Some of the tools have a very complex design while others are very simple like a sawhorse. While improvements have been made on the structure and design of most tools, collapsible sawhorse and generally sawhorses have remained somehow the same.

Some effort to improve sawhorses has been done by a few manufacturers of woodworking and metalworking tools and equipment. However, some good designs that lead to improvement in the proficiency of the tool have been attained by some manufacturers. The simplicity of the design of sawhorses usually drives people to make their own. Making one does not take too much time, effort, or money.

Sawhorses can be built from metal, wood, or plastic. In most cases, they are built using wood because it is cheap and easily available. However, modern manufacturers are now using metal because of its strength, durability, and aesthetic appeal. Thus, one can buy a metallic sawhorse from the stores easily. Online stores also have very many sellers of these items ready to ship to any destination around the globe.

The work of a saw horse is that it serves as a platform from which one can do their work. For instance, it can be used to support a plank or board to allow sawing. In the same manner, it can be used to hold metal sheet as one works on it. When two saw horses are used together, they can form a scaffold. The terms mule and pony are sometimes used to refer to this equipment.

This equipment is referred to using the term sawbuck in the United States. People in the US use them as racks for supporting logs when they are being sawn. Others are modified to comprise components that can hold metallic or wooden work pieces for them to be worked on, chiseled, drilled or cut.

One can design sawhorses in a way that they can be folded. This is for easier storage. Through folding, the space taken up by the equipment is minimized. Also, storage, lifting and transportation are made much easier. The design must be nice. This is to ensure one can fold the tool without damaging it. After folding is done, the equipment becomes easier and safer to handle.

If the saw horse is made with a wide top, it can be used as a workbench in the field. Sawhorses are usually used to provide safety in a workplace. For instance, by using the equipment as a support platform when sawing or drilling work pieces, injuries are minimized. Trying to saw or drill a work piece when holding it in the hands can be a major safety hazard.

Normally, sawhorses as pieces of equipment do not cost much. Some factors normally determine their cost. The seller, location, size, and material are among these factors. Metallic sawhorses obviously cost more than wooden one.
