The brain is one of the most interesting organs we have in our bodies. In spite of the many studies that have been conducted, there are many aspects of this organ that still baffle even the brightest of scientists. The functioning of the brain is an important factor in determining success in various aspects of our lives. Regardless of what we are involved in, we all strive for better brain function.

The brain can be compared to clay. Like the clay being molded by a potter, so can the organ be shaped by the situations that we go through. This property is termed neuroplasticity. When faced with a new challenge, the brain forms neural pathways that are later learned progressively until the individual becomes an expert in the area in question. On the other hand, old pathways that are no longer needed are lost.

There are a number of habits that one can engage in to improve their memory and their ability to analyze situations critically. One of the things that you need to do is to regularly engage yourself in mental workout. This means that you challenge yourself to learn new things every day. Sticking to the same old routine denies your brain the ability to develop new pathways that are needed for improvement of function.

The most beneficial activities are those that require one to maintain a high level of attention. You need to be challenged to generate solutions that you had not thought of before. If one is a musician, for instance, playing a simpler new piece is better than playing a more complex piece that has been played repeatedly before. Repetitions do not stimulate the formation of new pathways.

There is a role for physical exercise. When one is involved in strenuous physical activity, there is an increase in blood supply to the brain. This translates into higher levels of oxygen and nutrients. Exercise has also been shown to stimulate the release growth factors that are vital to enhanced neuroplasticity. Aerobic exercises (particularly those done in the morning hours) are believed to have the greatest impact.

Diet plays a major role in brain development and function. It has been established deficiencies of vitamin B12 can cause loss of memory and mental fogginess. In one study conducted in Europe, the vitamin was found to be protective against development of Alzheimers and atrophy. The rich sources of this vitamin include milk, eggs, pork, beef and seafood among others. The other important nutrients include vitamin D, omega 3 fats and coconut oil.

Strive to get adequate quality sleep every night. This should ideally be between 6 and 8 hours in a conducive environment. When we fall asleep our brains reset and we have the ability to generate more solutions to problems that we previously faced. Our ability to be creative is also increased due to enhanced synaptic connections between different fibers that take place during sleep.

The achievement of better mental performance can take place in persons of any age. The ability to form new pathways and adapt to new challenges exists even in old age. Although the elderly may have a bit of atrophy, the remaining amount of grey matter still has a huge potential. However, this can only occur if one challenges themselves with new skills regularly.
