If you are considering a career in journalism but have not had any experience then it is likely you might not have a very accurate picture of what the career entails. People outside the field generally think of is as an overwhelming pursuit. And many are simply clueless as to where to begin.

Writing is actually a lot easier than you think. All kinds of advice and resources and things like editing services can easily be found on the internet. Now is the time to get this handled.

The first thing you need to do is lower your standards. It is very effective to expect less from yourself rather than try to be the best possible. You should for example, allow the first draft to be very poor. This is important so that you can actually write something. One of the main causes of writers block is when you try to carve out the perfect words on a blank sheet of paper. It is much easier to modify an ugly page than try to fill an empty one.

Another thing to note is that attempting to write a book will become a habit. The most successful habit adopters have made it extremely easy to do initially. Trying to meditate for twenty minutes a day for instance will only result in frustration and quitting. Trying to add a habit is harder than you think. Only an hour a day means you will attempt to push already ingrained habits aside to create a new block of time. Instead, opt for a method that encourages consistency like committing to writing a single page a day.

Writers also get distracted and procrastinate. There are many methods around this. First, determine if your are a night owl or an early bird. Most successful writers report to having the most creativity between ten in the evening to seven in the morning, some prefer to write during the day. Try both to see which fits you.

Focus is another thing that you might struggle with. Luckily, there are many methods to ensure that you are on task when you need to be. One of the most well known methods recommends intervals of twenty five minutes of focused attention followed by five minutes of leisure.

Another factor that will help you especially if you are an independent author is having a deadline that is shorter than you think you need. This works because it forces you to focus on your work and naturally remove all the useless fluff from your work and so you can effectively focus on the few that is crucial. Focusing on the crucial is another important point.

If you picture anything at all, martial arts, music, the economy, one thing everything has in common is that there are lesser useful aspects than there are extra ones. When you think of fighting, the greatest grappling martial art has over five thousand techniques yet only thirty six techniques are necessary for the majority of real fights. It is therefore imperative for you to analyze what things you really need to be doing and make an effort to remove as many time wasters as possible.

Once you incorporate these new tools I your arsenal, the only thing left to do is immersion. You will need to get immersed in creative pursuits if you want to compose fiction. If non fiction is more your preference then you need to have first hand experience in the subject matter.
