GreenQloud newsletter, August 2014

July was an interesting month for GreenQloud, with successes and challenges. Continue reading to find out more about where we're at with our new infrastructure setup, the launch of our exciting community platform and why GreenQloud is such a big fan of open source technology.

New infrastructure setup

To provide our customers with more reliable and stable resources, we’ve implemented a new infrastructure setup for our public cloud that utilizes a proven (rather than bleeding edge) transport solution that's designed to address/fix some recurring compute node/storage connection issues we've had recently.

The first phase of customer migrations to this reconfigured setup recently took place and we’re scheduling migration of all remaining customer instances over the next few weeks in several waves.

All customers will be notified via email of their upcoming migration schedule and have the opportunity to schedule a specific date and time that works best to minimize potential business disruptions. Please be on the lookout for these emails, and respond to support@greenqloud.com to schedule your migration, if needed.

Some details and benefits of the new setup:

  • Reconfigured physical data transport to a more stable, proven transport solution
  • Live host evacuation eliminates customer downtime
  • Hypervisor resolution takes minutes
  • Live storage migration accommodates load spikes without downtime

Lesson learned: we’ve learned the hard way that sometimes being bleeding edge, while cool, is not the best choice to meet customers’ needs. We’ll continue to experiment with the latest and greatest technologies internally while providing a public cloud with the most stable and proven technologies to customers.

Please check our status page for up-to-the-minute system information and if you experience issues with your machines, please send in a support ticket.

Join our new community platform

Some additional improvements across our service offering include our new community platform, which went live last Friday. It’s all about staying connected with our community and helping to facilitate conversation. We see it as a way for people to inspire each other with ideas and help give more detailed support with things like setting up blogs, file syncing or other web services.

If you have a question, an idea, a suggestion, or just want to talk to us or meet interesting new people – we encourage you to become a Qloud Viking! Join the discussion at community.greenqloud.com.

ARK Technology selects GreenQloud as renewable energy-powered infrastructure vendor

One of the big successes last month was announcing our new relationship with ARK Technology, an Iceland-based maritime environmental impact research organization. The company will use GreenQloud’s public cloud infrastructure and cloud technical services consultancy to help the marine industry monitor and reduce its environmental impact, in order to meet ship pollution regulations.

Apache CloudStack™ case study

Open source has made technology advances in cloud computing possible, bringing together ideas from all facets of the industry. GreenQloud has always been heavily involved in open source development so we were delighted to recently feature in a case study showcasing us as a prominent user and contributor to Apache CloudStack™.

GreenQloud listed as a 2014 SUSTAINIA100 solution

SUSTAINIA100 is an annual guide to 100 innovative sustainability solutions from around the world, and GreenQloud was recently named as one of this year's top solutions. The overall 2014 Sustainia Award winner will be announced in Copenhagen on 30th October.
