While slow moving drains can be an annoyance for the occupants of a home, if something is not done about the problem it can grow even worse. These pipes are likely to form a complete clog so that nothing passes through and sewer begins backing up in the fixtures of the home. While homeowners can take steps to decrease the likelihood of problems in the future, at this point, drain cleaning can remedy the trouble.

In a kitchen, the cook should never dispose of cooking grease and fats in a sink. The hot water used to flush the fat will eventually cool and a sticky residue is left on pipes. It attracts other waste and decreases the volume of the flow. A plumber must use tools to manually remove the accumulation of fats and other debris from the pipe.

In showers and tubs, hair causes the greatest amount of problems. It accumulates in traps and mixes with soap and other material to slow draining. When operating correctly, one should never have to stand in water to take a shower. Occupants of homes may install screens that collect hair before it flows into drains.

Toilets often stop flushing correctly due to paper plugs. Sometimes, all that is required is a little time for the paper to dissolve and break up. A plunger may also help. If all else fails, it is time to call for help from a plumber.

When several fixtures are having problems the clog may be in the main line. This can be from many different causes. Sometimes, very thin tree roots grow through the line and eventually block the flow. Plumbers use a rooter to cut through the clog.

Drain cleaning can help to keep the plumbing in a home working correctly. No matter which of the fixtures is causing a problem, plumbers offer help. Homeowners can help to prevent problems in the first place by being careful of what is disposed down the fixtures.
