If you are interested in all the latest DIY trends, the recent popularity for glitter feature walls might be puzzling you. It can be a hit or miss decoration technique and it all depends on how and where you use glitter wall paint in your home. In most cases less is more, but as with most DIY jobs, it all comes down to personal taste.

When it comes to all things sparkly, quality is definitely an important issue. You might be able to get away with a more budget product if you are using it sparingly, but the issue with the cheap varieties is glitter-drop. Simply put, if the product is cheap you will find your entire house very quickly covered in glitter, which is guaranteed to become annoying quickly.

It is surprisingly versatile when used correctly, but if in doubt, less is definitely more with glitter. At first glance you might think there is no place for it outside of a teenager's bedroom, but with changing trends it is proving to be quite good at adding a touch of class to a living room or bedroom.

The most popular way to use this paint at the moment is with a feature wall in a more subtle neutral tone. This simply adds a little sparkle to the room without it being too overwhelming. But there's no reason why you can't use a brighter colour and really make it a statement wall. Decorating the entire room like that may be a touch too much for the rest of the family though.

Another surprisingly simple way to use it is to add a mural to one wall. This can be something extravagant for those of a creative nature, or you could simply buy a stencil and use that to add a limited amount of glitter to the room. You can buy stencils with just about any design now, from minimalist flowers to more complex layered designs.

Painting tiles in your bathroom or kitchen is a great way to add colour or sparkle to the room and can be as dramatic or as subtle as you like. If you only want a touch of sparkle, try painting a border around the room, or random tiles. If you want something dramatic, add it to all the tiles or a design across them. Either way it is guaranteed to take any guests by surprise.

If you are apprehensive about decorating a room, you can always choose the less permanent and overpowering option of painting part of or all of a piece of furniture. Again, you can choose to add an image on the furniture so it is more subtle, or a simple pattern and you'll need to buy the right paint for the material you are painting, or it will be flaking off in no time.

The style might not be for everyone, but when done right it can make an amazing difference to the home. Whether it is a big statement wall, or just subtle touches here and there, a touch of sparkle can make anyone smile.
