The Sunshine State is probably the most aptly nicknamed of the United States of America. It's no wonder that it's one of the most popular holiday destinations in the US and that so many people choose to relocate here. The sunny and pleasant Fort Myers climate has made this the Florida city of choice for countless people who love spending time outside and being active.

Located in the southwestern part of the Florida Peninsula, Fort Myers makes for the perfect base. It's within hours from the Florida Keys with their many diving and deep-sea fishing opportunities. Orlando's famous theme parks, the bustling nightlife of Miami and the tranquility of the Everglades are within easy reach too. Moreover, the city itself is a cosmopolitan one with inhabitants of every age and ethnic background.

The climate in Fort Myers is one of the best reasons to visit. In fact, many people have made the city their home because the weather is so good, with an average of a whopping 271 sunny days per year, making sunscreen a must no matter when you visit. Among those who had winter residences here were Thomas Edison, Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone. Many a professional sports star also lives in this part of Florida.

The weather in Fort Myers is at its best in spring. This is when the mercury reaches the eighties and there is little enough rainfall to make you want to be on the beach or in the water as often as possible. If you prefer being on the sidelines, head to the stadiums where the Minnesota Twins or the Boston Red Sox have their pre-season training. Otherwise, admire the fluttering critters that have found sanctuary at the Butterfly Estates.

In summer, the Fort Myers weather becomes very hot and humid. This is when most rain falls but normally the rain comes in the form of short and heavy thunderstorms that offer welcome respite from the heat. Hurricanes may affect the area later in summer, so check the local weather reports before venturing out on a boat to go fishing or diving.

Fall and winter in this part of the country will lure you to the hiking and biking trails and golf courses. Rainfall is much less and the air isn't so humid, yet the days are still pleasantly warm. Even nights are mild and is very rare to experience frost or snow. If you do want to spend more time indoors in winter, be sure to visit the Edison and Ford Winter Estates to see how these industrial giants spent the cooler months.

The city has every facility you can dream of, with plenty of restaurants and bars, especially along the waterfront in the downtown area. On those days when you want to give your skin a rest from the sun's rays, you'll find a good selection of retail outlets, among them the Edison Mall. Another good way to spend a day is with a visit to the Calusa Nature Center and Planetarium or to the Imaginarium Science Center. Public transport is good and you'll also find that this is a very bicycle-friendly city.

Accommodation is easy to find and you'll find a range of options for different budgets. You may also contact a real-estate agent about properties for rent or even to buy so you can have your own winter estate. Southwest Florida International Airport is the gateway to the city and you can fly in directly from most major American cities, as well as from Canada and Germany.
