Using Couriers To Handle Global Shipping

By Ruth Taylor

Nowadays many companies and individuals need to send items overseas using courier companies. When looking for a firm to handle global shipping there are a few things to take into consideration before sending items. There are many shippers available worldwide to handle this business in a professional way and at reasonable cost.

Items ranging from things such as passports and letters through to large bulky items can be shipped to nearly every country in the world. When looking for a company to ship items a few quotes should be obtained to compare price and service. The fees charged differ vastly according to a few things.

Initially the weight of the package needs to be obtained and some thought given as to how it will be wrapped to prevent damage. Many little items such as paperwork can be sent for a standard fee with heavier packets charged per kilo or by size if large but not so weighty. It is normally the sender's responsibility to parcel up the items prior to collection but many firms will offer this service for a small fee.

Another factor that will affect the price charged is the time it takes to send a package. Most companies will offer everything from a same day service up to ten days if it is not that urgent. Items can be sent to most countries around the world but it is worth checking beforehand with the chosen carrier as some countries are not on their list.

When the parcel is picked up or taken to the depot some documentation will need to be filled in and signed by both parties. This document should be kept until the item is signed for by the recipient as it will have all relevant information and more importantly a serial number. This unique number allows the package to be tracked through every step of the sending process.

During the process of looking for the best prices it is advisable to contact as many carriers as possible for comparisons. The larger reputable firms are usually the preferred option for most senders but it is also well worth calling smaller independent businesses to obtain quotes. These small companies will often use the bigger ones to handle their freight but due to the amount they send will get a preferential rate.

Small carriers are often the better choice for an individual as they will allow cash or credit card payment. The larger firms will often require the sender to open an account before doing any business. If sending items regularly it may be worth opening an account as a better rate can be negotiated depending on frequency of shipping.

Prior to sending anything through a postal system of carriage it is important to obtain insurance for items sent to cover loss or damages. All companies will have cover in place at an extra cost or the senders can arrange cover themselves. After working out the value of the package and its replacement costs if lost suitable insurance can be provided for peace of mind.
